It’s with great pride and honour that Alfa Matrix inaugurates its new label “vinyl” division with a very very special conceptual release: “Thalys” by METROLAND…

Something that started as a crazy idea in a text message, got followed by a 6 second melody written while the band was on the road supporting 80’s legend OMD, and eventually morphed into a unique multi-cultural adventure and fruitful collaboration with the renown international railway company itself: “Thalys”, symbolised worldwide by its famous high-speed burgundy red trains…

You are fond of vintage keyboards, you got seduced last year by Belgium’s METROLAND’s successful “Mind The Gap” album and you have LP’s by KRAFTWERK, TELEX and KOMPUTER in your music collection? Then, dear ladies and gentlemen, get seated for a new exciting sonic journey across Europe with METROLAND who bring us to the next level with their trademark sound made of carrying layers of melodic synths, robotic vocals and analogue drum machines.

This stand-alone “Thalys” 12″ release marks the switch for METROLAND, from one dimension to another that will be opened and revealed in 2015 only… The “Thalys” tune perfectly fits this vinyl format with its extended structure in 2 consecutive non-stop mixed songs crowned by a splendid (and vinyl exclusive!!) remake on the second side by living legend producer/remixer PAUL KENDALL (best known for his current work with Alan Wilder (RECOIL/DEPECHE MODE) and his numerous remixes and productions for the legendary Mute Records). Additionally the B-side song “From Station To Station” was created from recycled parts of the “Thalys” original song to reach new destinations city after city…

The included CD edition of the “Thalys” EP features alternative versions of the songs including stunning remixes by JONTEKNIK and NORTHERN KIND.

We will also notice within this challenging travelling conceptual project, that although all the burgundy red trains are this time departing from METROLAND’s homeland capital Brussels, the digital version of the “Thalys” EP gets released in 3 different language versions according to its final “download” destination, with a French version for the “Paris” edition, a German version for the “Düsseldorf” edition and a “London” edition in English for the rest of the world… Die-hard METROLAND collectors will nevertheless find their way around these territorial frontiers and embrace all 3 versions thanks to Alfa Matrix’s official space-travelling Bandcamp machine alfamatrix.bandcamp.com .

With a strong and productive career in the electronic scene together, longtime Belgian friends and partners in synthetic crime, Passenger A and Passenger S decided to take on a new challenge and create another conceptual band project focusing on the daily routine of transportation and commuting to work. METROLAND was born. 

Emerging from an uncontrollable burning passion for vintage keyboards, and acknowledging inspiration from acts in the likes of KOMPUTER, I START COUNTING or the unmatchable technological pioneers of KRAFTWERK, METROLAND carry us on an electronic journey animated by authentic warm sequences, melodic synthetic layers and robotic vocals, the whole project spiced up with analogue drum machines.

Imagine blending the best ingredients of many decades of electronic music into an all new sonic world! Well… this aural mixture can be found on the debut album “Mind The Gap” by METROLAND. From ‘T.F.L. (Transport For London)’s dreamy piano riff to the wobbly acid-like ‘M-E-T-R-O’ through the sinister sequences of title-track “Mind The Gap”, it is obvious that METROLAND will guide your senses on a sound-driven ride through the buzzing traffic or overcrowded vehicles, without limitations. And if METROLAND do not hesitate openly revealing their influences, they also dare to push back the limits of the expected music frame for METROLAND! This way, if the majestic melodic track “Enjoying The View” can be heard as a true ode to KRAFTWERK, METROLAND does not hesitate crossing the line by inserting heavier edged bass sequences in up tempo tracks such as “Theme for Metroland” or “Inner City Transport”. They will also invite the wittiness from acts like KOMPUTER in “It’s More Fun To Commute” or “The Passenger” or yet add nice hints of their homeland ancestors TELEX on “Moscow Main”…

Released simultaneously with its twin EP “CB-128”, “CB-708” by CUBIC vs. 808 DOT POP presents the sharp, compact counterpart to CUBIC’s “Back to 808” project. Both EPs spotlight the same three tracks, each offering a different perspective – short-form immediacy here, extended dancefloor exploration on the companion release.

“Back to 808” itself was born from a unique role reversal between long-time collaborators: after CUBIC had previously reworked METROLAND’s “The Colour Temperature”, Passenger S of 808 DOT POP / METROLAND reshaped “Back to Basic” into a retro-futuristic synth voyage where vintage electronics, melody, and technology merge seamlessly.

On “CB-708”, these songs appear in alternative 7” versions, tighter and more direct than the album cuts. Focused on hooks, structure, and instant impact, they reconnect CUBIC’s refined synth pop with classic single-format efficiency – a perfect entry point back into the “Back to 808” universe.
