Unter Null, the American dark electro and industrial project of Erica Dunham, has a new double-CD on Alfa Matrix. “The Rise From Ruin (and the Ritual of Becoming)” was released on 26 June 2026 as a limited-edition digipak that includes an expanded booklet, plus a download, and it looks back at the project’s early years.
“The Rise From Ruin (and the Ritual of Becoming)” is available now on the Alfa Matrix store as a limited 2CD digipak, and the download can be found on Bandcamp.
Built around ‘The Failure Epiphany’
The album “The Failure Epiphany” is the centrepiece: released through Alfa Matrix, it did much to establish the project’s initial reputation in dark electro and industrial circles. The second disc broadens the view with material from three early EPs, “Sick Fuck”, “Sacrament” and “Absolution,” and with reworks by the artists below. In all, the set runs to 34 tracks.
- Noisuf-X vs. X-Fusion
- Manufactura
- T3chnophobia
- Aslan Faction
- Grendel
- KiEw
- Terrorfakt
- C-Drone-Defect
Erica Dunham talks through the album in a separate interview on this site.
About Unter Null
Unter Null came back in 2025 with new studio recordings on Alfa Matrix, starting with the single “Coming Up To Breathe” on 4 April and continuing with the EP “You Made A Monster” on 25 July, which carries remixes from C-Lekktor, Leæther Strip and Frontal Boundary and is available digitally through Bandcamp and other services. Dunham also lent remixes and guest work to other projects that year, some of it linked to Frontal Boundary.
Dunham launched Unter Null as a one-person project in Seattle, Washington, in 1998. Early on it played power noise and abrasive electronics; by way of its first self-released recordings and gigs in the early 2000s, the sound migrated to aggrotech and dark elektro.
“The Failure Epiphany” arrived on Alfa Matrix in 2005 (a reissue with bonus material came later), on the back of club interest in “Your Nightmare” and “Sick Fuck,” and Dunham toured across the United States and Europe in 2005–06. On 25 December 2008 a fire at her home and studio destroyed the recording equipment, yet files could be recovered, and “Moving On” came out on Alfa Matrix in 2010, with expanded and international editions. She then spent a period in Hamburg before returning to the U.S. Pacific Northwest, putting out the occasional release and remix through the 2010s and also working on the more atmospheric side project Stray.
