About Front 242

Front 242 began in Aarschot, Belgium, in 1981 as a project of Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen. Richard Jonckheere, known as Richard 23, came on board in 1983, a year after Patrick Codenys and Jean-Luc De Meyer had arrived ahead of “Geography.” The four core members regrouped in 1997 following a hiatus, with Tim Kroker handling the drums at concerts.

On record, the group opened with the single “Body to Body” in 1981. Its first release in the U.S. was “Take One,” and by 1984 it was under contract to Wax Trax! in Chicago. “No Comment” (1984), “Official Version” (1987) and “Front by Front” (1988) came next, followed by “Tyranny >For You<” in 1991, “06:21:03:11 Up Evil” in 1993, “05:22:09:12 Off” in the same year, and “Pulse” in 2003.

Over the years Alfa Matrix has issued side-projects of the band, and later also vinyl reissues and anniversary editions of its work. Live performances stopped after the “Black Out” farewell tour, whose closing concert was held at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels on 25 January 2025. More news on the band is collected on the Front 242 tag page, and the wider label catalogue can be explored on the Alfa Matrix Bandcamp.
