Frontal Boundary interview: the ideas behind ‘Failure’

American industrial/EBM project Frontal Boundary have talked to Side-Line about “Failure,” their album on Alfa Matrix, available digitally and as a limited 2CD digipak. Asked what the title means to them in 2026, the band describe a blend of collapse, purge and necessary step forward: a comment on a society that keeps sliding backwards, and on human shortcomings in general.

The record, they explain, is as personal as it is social, built from inner conflict, a sense of not belonging and a world where feeling safe is no longer possible. Songs such as “Nothing” and “Reset” touch the emotions that follow, and the band talk about hitting zero, pausing to see the bigger picture and then rebuilding, even when that is hard. They call the guest collaborations, which include Unter Null and Protokoll 19, organic and fluid, saying the shared sound and vision left them feeling they had found family.

The remix disc gets warm thanks: every remixer, they say, did an excellent job, and the reworks are described as weapons for keeping dancefloors moving. When asked what listeners should watch burn first, they name religion, arguing that too many people use it to blame others and justify hatred. On their place in the scene, the band say they are not reinventing the genre but want a sound that is instantly recognisable and never boxed in, with “Awake” singled out as a track that took them beyond familiar territory. They welcome comparisons to Suicide Commando and Combichrist as motivation and finish by thanking their fans.

About Frontal Boundary

Brendin Ross launched Frontal Boundary in 2002 and relaunched it in 2008 following a hiatus, taking the band on the road with God Module and Die Sektor. Vocalist Krz Souls arrived in 2019, Jaysen Craves added synths in 2023, and Los Angeles is the project’s home base.

Debut album “Electronic Warfare” (2012) was put out independently, picked up coverage from specialist media and was reissued as “Electronic Warfare V.2” in 2013. For a while the band played live but released little, since members were busy with other groups. “The Fall” (2021) marked a quiet return to the studio, and 2023 brought a string of new singles plus a deal with Re:Mission Entertainment. “Shutting Down” arrived as a full album in 2024, backed by a single and a video, and was revisited on “Shutting Down Remixed” (2025).

In March 2025 the band teamed up with Unter Null on the single “Hollow,” which foreshadowed their Alfa Matrix years. After signing with the label that July, they debuted with “Hate” and “Faith,” previewing the 2CD album “Failure.” More on the band is gathered on the Frontal Boundary tag page.
