Get ready to dive headfirst into the electrifying world of GLIS as they make an unexpected comeback with their new single release. After the announcement of their highly anticipated album “Gateway To Oblivion” set for May 2024, Shaun Frandsen couldn’t wait to treat his loyal fanbase to a taste of what’s to come.

“Ascension” tackles the complex theme of AI-driven technological advancement clashing with humanity’s emotional depth in an era dominated by capitalism, power and relentless progress. Musically, it’s a hard-hitting dark EBM masterpiece infused with a captivating future-pop hook that cuts through with an undeniable edge. And if that’s not enough, the single version amps up the addictive qualities, drawing comparisons to iconic bands like ICON OF COIL and COVENANT. Plus, brace yourself for a mesmerizing remix by none other than the legendary ROTERSAND and a harsh industrial take by aggrotech act FRONTAL BOUNDARY.

But wait, there’s more! GLIS delivers an exclusive non-album track, “Darkness Be My Guide,” delving into the darker, grittier side of their repertoire, reminiscent of industrial heavyweights like :WUMPSCUT: and LEAETHER STRIP.

So buckle up, because GLIS is back and better than ever, ready to take you on a sonic journey like no other. Get ready to embrace the darkness and let the music be your guide.

GLIS, the electronic music project founded by Shaun Frandsen in 2001, makes an unexpected triumphant comeback in 2024 with the release of “Gateway To Oblivion”, a manifestation of the artist’s DNA, blending the raw energy of industrial music with the infectious melodies of future pop.

“Gateway To Oblivion” is a testament to the American artist’s versatility as the driving force behind GLIS. Serving as the primary producer, vocalist, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Frandsen has crafted a spontaneous album that is both powerful and straight-to-the-point.

Drawing inspiration from a variety of influences, the album takes listeners on a captivating journey. The atmospheric “Into the Flames,” sets the mood with nods to NIN and DEPECHE MODE’s “Songs of Faith and Devotion” era. The track “Ascension” and the instrumental piece “Mexico” deliver a straight-up early 2000s synth pop vibe, drawing inspiration from the likes of ICON OF COIL, APOPTYGMA BERZERK or VNV NATION. Tracks like “Control” echo future pop inspirations with a touch of UNDERWORLD / ROTERSAND influence, while “Cut Away the Demons” and “Damaged” take a detour into oppressive industrial noise and powerful EBM, inspired by HEALTH, MENTALLO & THE FIXER or yet LEATHER STRIP. Each track carries its own unique flavour, contributing to the album’s overall diversity, including the unique guest appearance of his good old partner in crime Jennifer Parkin / AYRIA on the catchy “Dream Chaser” and the fresh darkwave anthems “Angels” and “We Live in the Iceage” taking cues from FEVER RAY and THE KNIFE.

Sebastian Komor (KOMOR KOMMANDO / ICON OF COIL…) also played a pivotal role in shaping the album’s sound, ensuring a cohesive and powerful production. Thematically, “Gateway To Oblivion” revolves around the ascension of mankind and the challenges posed by technology. Each song tackles specific themes, creating a narrative that resonates with personal and societal struggles.

In this unexpected return, GLIS proves that its creative fire continues to burn brightly, pushing the boundaries of electronic music. “Gateway To Oblivion” is not just an album; it’s a profound exploration of the human experience.as well as a bold statement reaffirming GLIS’s influential presence in the electronic music scene.

It’s been 20 years since the American synthpop/EBM band GLIS debuted on Alfa-Matrix with the ‘Balance’ album – being one of the 10 first bands signing to the Belgian label. Time flies!

The opening track ‘Sunrise’ was an instant favorite amongst fans of the genre, and sustained as a club hit in several other iterations, pushing GLIS on the top of the future pop scene next to bands in the likes of COVENANT, ICON OF COIL, VNV NATION or yet APOPTYGMA BERZERK…

The last we heard of GLIS’ frontman Shaun Frandsen was in 2013 when he released a cathartic mix of post-punk and alternative genres on the ‘Phoenix’ album and the ‘Seconds’ EP.

Now we pay homage to the beginnings with this brand new enhanced v3.0 mix of the ‘Sunrise’ track, as well as a showcase of the evolutionary history of the track throughout the years, also including instrumental versions.

Only Shaun Frandsen himself can tell us what’s next, now that the GLIS machines got reactivated?!
Future pop forever… Sunrise forever…

GLIS returned after years of silence with the pre-album appetizer “Apocalypse Parties” in the summer of 2012. Then in early 2013, Shaun Frandsen surprised his fans by bringing in a main course of nostalgic indie-darkwave sound to the “Phoenix” album.

He continues to pursue his love for dreamy ethereal rock and post-punk influences on the new 4 song single, “Seconds”. A fan favorite from the “Phoenix” album, “Seconds” is freshly remastered by Daniel Myer (HAUJOBB), while Shaun Frandsen and longtime GLIS drummer Michael Wimer take their love of spacious post-punk (JOY DIVISION / SECTION 25) and thrust it into an eerie, sci-fi realm. Almost as if the ghost of Martin Hannett was in the studio with the two, “Seconds” captures the experimental vibe and raw urgency of the post-punk era.

Following “Seconds” are three wondrous B-sides that Shaun Frandsen produced himself in his studio. “Road To Nowhere” continues with more post-punk influences the likes of THE STRANGLERS and HUSKER DU, pairing it with a slamming lo/fi garage rock despondency. “Summertide” is a romantic indie-folk jam that ties in a modern electronic atmosphere, in which Shaun Frandsen wrote based on his own wedding. Finally, “The Ghost Of Us” is a lush and haunting swan song of lost love that blends acoustic guitar with the same distinctive electronics that GLIS introduced to us on “Phoenix”. All in all, “Seconds” serves up as a rich, palatable dessert to the main course of “Phoenix” and showcases that there’s more to Shaun Frandsen’s artistry as a musician than we originally thought. What will he do next?

Almost 8 years have passed since the release of “Nemesis”. 8 long years of growth and insight, of reflecting silence and chaotic noise, of death and (re)birth… Shaun Frandsen started recording new music again, but he has changed with time, he aged and started reflecting on the music from his youth. He went through a nostalgic period, listening to all of his old post-punk records, reliving the experience, drawing from its energy and somehow translating this in the studio…“Phoenix” is what happened.

The new GLIS studio album is clearly a very personal album for Shaun Frandsen, almost an autobiographical journey: “I wrote it as an ode for those who have inspired me the most. I didn’t hide my heart at all,” he says.

This album begins rough, dark and chaotic, sometimes sad. The music-style changes from track to track, but somehow manages to stay focused. It dwells in the dark, then finds peace, and comes back again with a new outlook from where it began. On “Phoenix”, GLIS took a bit of Bowie and Eno (“Keep The Memory”, “Coldheart Tempo”), and a classic-era 4AD sound to create the ambiance and grabbed some inspiration from Nine Inch Nails, Underworld (“Insomniac”, “Dead Set”) and Joy Division for the body of the music. It’s when female vocalist Lauren Krothe is introduced on the album that ushers in the transition from darkness to light, lo-fi darkwave with an ethereal hint to Cocteau Twins (“Take It This Far” or the beautiful “Blue Sky Night”). Then come the anthemic and hooky “Crush” and the instant hit “Stars In The Sea” which both end the journey on a hopeful positive outlook and loop with the opening and closing groovey track “Apocalypse Parties” that will remind you of the early WaxTrax electro/industrial sound with a touch of melodic modernity.

By writing it with his heart, Shaun Frandsen definitely accomplished something personal and meaningful with this album, giving integrity and soul to “Phoenix”, a chef d’oeuvre which falls down and rebuilds itself in a way that follows the fabled cycle. The track-list is set up in the same way. It’s an ode to GLIS’ past but also a nod to the future…

This deluxe carton box edition of the album holds an additional extended booklet and a bonus disc with exclusive bonus tracks…

“GLIS 2001-2008 a shot and a bassline, the revisited collection”, an album title which has as much importance as its sub-title: “15 tracks re-cut and remastered by Krischan Wesenberg of ROTERSAND”. GLIS’ frontman Shaun Frandsen indeed brings us something entirely unique in today’s dark scene. A straight re-cut concept for which he teamed up with Krischan Wesenberg (known for being the man behind the music of ROTERSAND) who worked from the fully mastered original versions of the 15 selected tracks. He rearranged the songs, used some parts from one song and cuts from others, adding overdubs to the re-edits, new beat elements, additional sequences, effects and filtering; basically making every track different from the original recordings.

Like ROTERSAND’s mastermind explains it himself: “The “re-works” I did on the GLIS tracks wouldn’t have been termed a “remix” in today’s dancefloor culture. When you see “remix” printed on the sleeve of a record, you mostly expect to hear a version which is very different from the original. Often you will find the vocal line on another track…”.
