In order to best prepare your ears for this new pure electronic bliss, CUBIC now releases this 4-track EP “c64” evoking nothing but the good old Commodore 64 computer – nostalgia!

The opening track “TITT” sets the tone and can somehow be described as a classic electro track with its mix of 808 style drums, a dreiklangsdimensionen snare, lots of HQ percussion sounds, analog basslines and vocoder voices. Electro boogie at its best! “OFFLINE” comes next with a more distorted sound and a hard hitting kick and its cool “Novation “bass station 2” synth feel, inviting us to all go offline in the mad mad computer world we all live in… “Art In” and its 4/4 kicks, effective bassline (Analogue Solutions ‘Fusebox synth) and classic Moog Sub 37 patch as lead sound takes us back to the sound of THE HACKER or yet COMMUTER! While the final cut “B C L” (standing for Basic Computer Language) is a sort of homage to the master of electro Anthony Rother with its 90’s like bassline made with the Modor NF-1, probably the only synthesizer ever made in Belgium!

As always with CUBIC’s distinctive sound, all tracks have been created using hardware gear only. “Nothing beats the fun of twiddling knobs”, says Franky Deblomme.

With the conceptual approach of revisiting his personal past influences, this time CUBIC brings us to the aftermath of the rave scene in which Manchester was a pioneering scene introducing emerging influential acts in the likes of ORBITAL, SYSTEM 7, 808STATE or yet APHEX TWIN, all of which shaped the foundation of CUBIC’s music roots.

The opener “Atlantic State” immediately evokes the early 90’s with its early 808STATE type of atmosphere: chill vibe, summer feeling, breakbeats… Pure nostalgia! The rave party continues then with the 2 “Polygon” tracks bringing us closer to ORBITAL and the unavoidable APHEX TWIN!

The EP then gets augmented by a floor packing remix by Peter Bellaert (known as MINIMALISTIX and also his recent retro-House project RETRO BELGICA) that could nicely fit in a DJ set list of MACEO PLEX or KOLSH. Last but not least comes the second remix by LECTREAU, the solo-project of Passenger A of METROLAND fame.

With the “Exit” series, CUBIC demonstrates that the influential view that “man is the product of his environment”, so forcefully stated by Hippocrates, can also apply to musicians.

After a first exciting stop in Frankfurt with the first edition, we were all wondering what would be the next CUBIC sonic destination. On this second chapter “Exit: Ghent”, CUBIC revisits his past influences and tributes the city of Ghent (Belgium) that so much influenced his personal music tastes and therefore influenced and shaped the foundation of his music.

Although Ghent already played an important role during the New Beat period, the seeds for what would later become what we know today as “electronic music” really started to blossom in the early 90s. “In 92, when I went to study in Ghent , I was at the right place at the right time to see the whole culture blossom. Although we were still in the grunge and guitars era in terms of mainstream music, electro started to bubble up. Ghent was then the home of some iconic record labels (Music Man, R&S records), specialised record shops, small bars and (after-)clubs (such as Zodiac, Les Enfants Terribles, etc)”. Remembers Franky.

This new 4-track EP carries the perfect summer vibes which remind us all that it’s not for nothing that Belgium is so famous for hosting the best and most prestigious electronic festivals. With fairy tale vocals and a main carrying melody that sticks in your mind in a fraction of a second, the opening track “Argon” instantly sets the mood! And the club feel intimacy simply gets underlined by “One For Greg”, evoking the Zodiac parties of the 90’s. “This track is dedicated to a good friend of mine who died far too young. In the early 90’s we used to visit the Zodiac club in the center of Ghent. These DJ’s inspired me. Definitely one of the reasons I got involved in electronic music later…”, Adds Franky with a certain nostalgia. “Hold On” taks us one step further incorporating elements of dance, techno and trance, capturing the essence of the iconic Belgian clubs of the time! Last but not least, this EP features once again other Belgian guests behind the remixing console, with none other than METROLAND fame turning “Asteroids” into a lush epic 9-minute plus version divided into 2 parts with a stunning tempo change.

Crisp, phat and trancey: this is the sound of C…UBIC.

“The sonic output from Frankfurt in the 90’s was a big influence: labels such as Harthouse and EYE Q, techno clubs like The Omen and Dorian Gray. It was techno, it was a culture, but more intense and different than the Belgian way of doing it”, Remembers Franky. “Still to this day the German sound is an inspiration”, he adds.

The first track “Asteroids” is a funky groovy track with a definite Der Dritte Raum feel to it. Space sound effects, colliding bass lines and female vocals… somehow all characteristics of classic CUBIC tune! “Impact 2023” has a darker tone, more stripped down with a shadowy mood, sometimes evoking the style of Extrawelt in a more club orientated perspective. And that’s not a surprise that this track then gets remixed by another talented Belgian act (NEVEL) giving it a techno body music dimension. And finally “Wieder im Keller” starts as an experimental and almost modular sounding minimal piece of music until the kick drops and sees it evolving layer after layer into a more funky groovy mind-blowing techno track!

Crisp, phat and punchy: this is the sound of C…UBIC.

3rd chapter in his conceptual sonic alphabet approach, the Belgian artist rolls out his freestyle electronic danceable assaults with grace and majesty across this new 5-track EP. The opening and previously unreleased track “Q” sets the tone of this very club-oriented release and reveals a very addictive spoken female voice on carrying electronics, evoking ANNE CLARK’s vox on an ORBITAL or 808 STATE tune! And the rave goes on with the hypnotic “12 inch edit” of the album song “S”, a true dark techno pearl with lush rolling bass lines. “S” is also featured later in a darker and harder “cherry mix” version plunging us back in the good old Belgian Cherry Moon club-life sounds from the mid 90’s… CUBIC then reinforces the mesmerising touch of the journey with a totally revamped “12 inch edit” of one of the most favourite songs from “The Cubic Alphabet” album: the letter “E” whose highly catchy melodic synths perfectly match the extra beats and sounds that carry us in an uplifting extended dancefloor trance. And this remedial session would not deserve its title without a groovy club mix of the unmatchable “F” and its sexy French & English (teaching) vocal samples…

With his new CUBIC project, Franky Deblomme (ex-DARKMEN) offers himself full artistic freedom within the wide spectrum of electronic music and distills his own eclectic influences into a fireworks display of melodic techno, minimal synth pop and 808 electro with a darkish touch of underground body music in the background.
