GLIS returned after years of silence with the pre-album appetizer “Apocalypse Parties” in the summer of 2012. Then in early 2013, Shaun Frandsen surprised his fans by bringing in a main course of nostalgic indie-darkwave sound to the “Phoenix” album.

He continues to pursue his love for dreamy ethereal rock and post-punk influences on the new 4 song single, “Seconds”. A fan favorite from the “Phoenix” album, “Seconds” is freshly remastered by Daniel Myer (HAUJOBB), while Shaun Frandsen and longtime GLIS drummer Michael Wimer take their love of spacious post-punk (JOY DIVISION / SECTION 25) and thrust it into an eerie, sci-fi realm. Almost as if the ghost of Martin Hannett was in the studio with the two, “Seconds” captures the experimental vibe and raw urgency of the post-punk era.

Following “Seconds” are three wondrous B-sides that Shaun Frandsen produced himself in his studio. “Road To Nowhere” continues with more post-punk influences the likes of THE STRANGLERS and HUSKER DU, pairing it with a slamming lo/fi garage rock despondency. “Summertide” is a romantic indie-folk jam that ties in a modern electronic atmosphere, in which Shaun Frandsen wrote based on his own wedding. Finally, “The Ghost Of Us” is a lush and haunting swan song of lost love that blends acoustic guitar with the same distinctive electronics that GLIS introduced to us on “Phoenix”. All in all, “Seconds” serves up as a rich, palatable dessert to the main course of “Phoenix” and showcases that there’s more to Shaun Frandsen’s artistry as a musician than we originally thought. What will he do next?

Before the X-mas festivities, ALFA MATRIX is closing the year 2012 with the 3rd edition in the “4.4U” mini-compilation concept series. The new December 2012 “4.4U” bundle gathers the following bands:

German master of darkness Dominik Van Reich starts the hostilities with this brand new amGod song “Assimilated” which announces a very poignant and intricate new album!

Coming next is our new Swedish Dark Elektro revelation CYNICAL EXISTENCE and the straight and explosive “I’m Broken” that is bound to become an instant club hit!

While the new GLIS “Phoenix” album is almost complete and will surprise more than one, Shaun Frandsen let his friend Elliott Berlin trash his last single “Apocalypse Parties” while they both were on tour with COMBICHRIST…

Cherry on the cake, the one and only ALIEN VAMPIRES come and test your body resistance in a blast with this high speed industrial injection entitled “Thy Mortal Human Side” – unreleased track so far!

“4.4U” offers a bundle selection of 4 Alfa Matrix artists each presenting 1 new song. A concept where the buyer decides which price he/she wants to pay for this 4-track compilation available in multiple sound quality formats. This way, the buyer clearly indicates how much he/she wants to support the artists who reveal new songs before the release of their next album.
Enjoy… and rendez-vous next year for our next “4.4U” encounter on Alfa Matrix’s official bandpage…

This EP is only available as a download via Bandcamp (see player below).

Almost 8 years have passed since the release of “Nemesis”. 8 long years of growth and insight, of reflecting silence and chaotic noise, of death and (re)birth… Shaun Frandsen started recording new music again, but he has changed with time, he aged and started reflecting on the music from his youth. He went through a nostalgic period, listening to all of his old post-punk records, reliving the experience, drawing from its energy and somehow translating this in the studio…“Phoenix” is what happened.

The new GLIS studio album is clearly a very personal album for Shaun Frandsen, almost an autobiographical journey: “I wrote it as an ode for those who have inspired me the most. I didn’t hide my heart at all,” he says.

This album begins rough, dark and chaotic, sometimes sad. The music-style changes from track to track, but somehow manages to stay focused. It dwells in the dark, then finds peace, and comes back again with a new outlook from where it began. On “Phoenix”, GLIS took a bit of Bowie and Eno (“Keep The Memory”, “Coldheart Tempo”), and a classic-era 4AD sound to create the ambiance and grabbed some inspiration from Nine Inch Nails, Underworld (“Insomniac”, “Dead Set”) and Joy Division for the body of the music. It’s when female vocalist Lauren Krothe is introduced on the album that ushers in the transition from darkness to light, lo-fi darkwave with an ethereal hint to Cocteau Twins (“Take It This Far” or the beautiful “Blue Sky Night”). Then come the anthemic and hooky “Crush” and the instant hit “Stars In The Sea” which both end the journey on a hopeful positive outlook and loop with the opening and closing groovey track “Apocalypse Parties” that will remind you of the early WaxTrax electro/industrial sound with a touch of melodic modernity.

By writing it with his heart, Shaun Frandsen definitely accomplished something personal and meaningful with this album, giving integrity and soul to “Phoenix”, a chef d’oeuvre which falls down and rebuilds itself in a way that follows the fabled cycle. The track-list is set up in the same way. It’s an ode to GLIS’ past but also a nod to the future…

This deluxe carton box edition of the album holds an additional extended booklet and a bonus disc with exclusive bonus tracks…
